What is Philosophy? | Definition, History, and Applications

What is philosophy?

Philosophy is the practice of systematic thinking and questioning about existence, knowledge, consciousness, and meaning. It explores the most fundamental questions of human experience and develops critical thinking and conceptual clarity.

Etymology of philosophy

The word “philosophy” comes from Ancient Greek:

  • Philo (φίλο): love
  • Sophia (σοφία): wisdom

Together, it means “love of wisdom,” which reflects the core orientation of philosophical inquiry.

History of philosophy

Philosophy is one of the oldest intellectual traditions, originating in Ancient Greece. Thinkers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle played a foundational role in shaping systematic philosophical thought. Over time, philosophy evolved through Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary periods, continuously interacting with science, theology, and other disciplines.

My academic background and relation to philosophy

I completed both my undergraduate and graduate studies in Philosophy at Boğaziçi University. During my academic journey, I focused particularly on themes such as consciousness, meaning, and love.

My master’s thesis explored the concept and experience of love, allowing me to engage with philosophy on both theoretical and experiential levels.

How I integrate philosophy into my sessions

I integrate philosophical approaches into my work through:

  • Questioning and deep inquiry
  • Meaning-making and conceptual clarification
  • Making lived experience more articulate and visible through language
  • Reflective exploration of inner processes

The aim is to support individuals in developing greater awareness of their own experience and expanding their intellectual and existential perspective.

I also integrate Philosophical Inquiry techniques into my sessions when they are aligned with your intention, your body, and the topic you wish to work on.
