What is Family Constellation Therapy? | Definition, History, Benefits, and Applications
What is Family Constellation Therapy?
Family Constellation Therapy is a systemic approach designed to make visible the repeating relational dynamics, emotional patterns, and transgenerational transmissions within a person’s life. It helps individuals recognize the unseen bonds within their family system and understand recurring life patterns from a broader systemic perspective.
Etymology of Family Constellation
The word “constellation” refers to the arrangement of elements into a specific order or structure. In the context of Family Constellation Therapy, it describes the relational positioning of family members and the hidden order within a family system.
History of Family Constellation Therapy
Family Constellation Therapy was developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger. While creating this method, Hellinger was influenced by several psychotherapeutic approaches, including:
- Jacob Levy Moreno – Psychodrama
- Virginia Satir – Family Therapy
- Fritz Perls – Gestalt Therapy
These approaches played a significant role in shaping the systemic and experiential foundation of Family Constellation work.
What is Family Constellation Therapy used for? (Benefits)

How I integrate Family Constellation into my sessions
In my sessions, I work with Family Constellation through representation, perception, and systemic awareness fields. The aim is to help individuals gain clarity about their place within their family system and to understand relational dynamics with greater consciousness.
I also integrate Family Constellation techniques into my sessions when they are aligned with your intention, your body, and the topic you wish to work on.
